Geneva police fired tear gas at protesters on Sunday after demonstrators set fire to a Tesla vehicle and smashed windows at a United Nations agency, venting fury at a Group of Seven summit held across the border in France.
A violent standoff extended into the evening following a series of incidents along the route of an afternoon march that drew an estimated 20,000 people, including some 600 so-called "Black Bloc" militants, according to figures from Geneva police spokesman Alexandre Brahier.
What Triggered the Violence
Demonstrators said they came to protest against the G7 as a symbol of concentrated political and economic power. Last week, Tesla owner Elon Musk became the world's first trillionaire.
- Protesters targeted what they depicted as symbols of capitalism and multilateralism, including a parked Tesla and the UN office.
- Demonstrators hurled stones and flares at a UN telecommunications building, prompting law enforcement action amid heightened regional security.
- Firefighters attended the scene of a burning car just minutes away from the march route as riot police cordoned off a secure zone for them to work.
- Demonstrators ripped bricks from the ground to throw at police, while children cried as tear gas wafted over downtown Geneva's sun-baked streets.
"To me, it is a meeting of the rich that shows once again how the rich can become even richer while the poor are left behind," said protester Pippa Saugy.

G7 Summit Agenda and Security Context
The June 15 to 17 G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, on the shore of Lake Geneva, brought together the leaders of France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States, alongside the European Union. Wars in the Middle East and Ukraine dominated the agenda, while leaders sought to avoid a clash with Trump as he worked to finalize a framework peace deal with Iran.
Businesses were boarded up and hundreds of riot police were deployed in the streets amid prior concerns about violence.
Another demonstrator, Clélia Colin, raised the issue of gender inequality, saying the values represented by the G7 are "completely misogynistic" and contribute to systemic inequality.
The demonstration had been previously organized by a coalition of activist groups after weeks of negotiations with local authorities, and was otherwise peaceful, drawing environmentalists, women's rights advocates, supporters of Palestinian rights, and opponents of imperialism, fascism, and capitalism.
