The scale is hard to absorb. In 2024, climate-related hazards shut schools or severely disrupted learning for more children than the entire population of Brazil. That number is not a projection. It is a documented count from UNICEF's first systematic global audit of climate-driven school disruptions, and it demands a serious policy response.

How Big the Problem Has Become

At least 242 million students in 85 countries experienced school disruptions caused by extreme climate events in 2024, including heatwaves, tropical cyclones, storms, floods, and droughts. That represents at least one in every seven students globally, from pre-primary through upper secondary level.

The geography of harm is not evenly spread:

  • South Asia recorded the worst impact, with 128 million students affected, followed by East Asia and the Pacific at 50 million.
  • At least 20 countries experienced nationwide school closures caused by climate-induced disasters.
  • 74 percent of affected students live in low- and lower-middle-income countries, which already face the sharpest constraints on educational infrastructure.

Heatwaves drove the largest single share of disruptions. In April alone, at least 118 million children in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, the Philippines, and Thailand were kept from school by dangerous temperatures. Students in grades 3 through 5 lose at least two weeks of academic growth in math and reading for every single week of missed instruction tied to extreme weather events. That multiplier makes climate-related closures far more damaging than their duration suggests.

The harm runs deeper than test scores:

  • Rising temperatures, storms, and floods damage school infrastructure and supplies, hamper safe routes to school, and directly impair students' concentration, memory, and physical health.
  • In fragile settings, prolonged school closures significantly reduce the likelihood of children returning, and place them at heightened risk of child marriage and child labor.
  • Communities hit by climate disasters often lose residents due to damaged homes and job losses, shrinking the student population and eroding district tax bases for years after the event.
  • Households with fewer resources, including less internet access, fewer books, and greater distance from schools, face the steepest barriers to learning continuity during disruptions.

A Crisis That Will Worsen Without Structural Action

A ten-year-old in 2024 will experience twice as many wildfires and tropical cyclones, three times more river floods, four times more crop failures, and five times more droughts over their lifetime on a 3 degree Celsius global warming pathway compared to a child born in 1970.

New evidence increasingly suggests that previous estimates have underrepresented the true scale of disruption, as data monitoring systems in many countries remain incomplete. The 242 million figure is almost certainly a floor, not a ceiling.

What effective response requires:

  • Climate-resilient school infrastructure built to withstand local hazard profiles.
  • National monitoring systems that track disruptions with the same rigor as enrollment data.
  • Learning continuity protocols that do not depend entirely on in-person attendance.
  • Targeted protection for girls and children in fragile contexts, where dropout risk spikes fastest after closures.
